What does UNDP stand for? And what do they play in Somalia? by Buuni Ismail

United Nations Development Program (UNDP), agency of the United
Nations was established in 1965 to unify the operations of the
Expanded Program of Technical Assistance and the United Nations
Special Fund. This continued on as separate components of UNDP until
full unification in 1971. The UNDP is a major source of technical
assistance in developing countries, with most of its grants being in
the form of consultants´ services, equipment, and fellowships for
advanced study abroad. Thousands of projects in areas as diverse as
resource planning, training institutes, the application of modern
technology to development, and the building of the economic and social
infrastructure are supported by the UNDP. It also administers UN
special purpose funds for resource exploration, combating
desertification, technology development and volunteers, and works

with
UN-associated agencies involved in development activities. It is
funded by voluntary contributions from UN members.
In Somalia, the UNDP works with local partners - NGOs, civil societies
and the government - towards a peaceful and secure nation for all
Somalis. Together with 15 other UN agencies in Somalia, UNDP is
helping Somalis recover from 20 years of conflict, build peace,
rebuild their institutions, and set Somalia on the path to
development. It works through three main programmers (Governance, Rule
of Law and Security, and Recovery and Sustainable Livelihoods). It
incorporates issues of Human Development and Economics, HIV and AIDS
and Gender in its work. The Millennium Development Goals, is the
overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015.
Nevertheless, the UNDP is involved more deeply in Somali political
games; almost running the whole country by itself. In behind the
doors, they nominated the top leads and at the same time, they tell
them what they want to do, they negotiate with clan leaders. So the
question is where is the Somali sovereignty, why saga NGOs, running
our country, is it the beginning to end of Somali sovereignty, is
there anything which those who call themselves leaders can do, let see
and wait until the history will charge.
